Alstom has selected GE Power Conversion to provide its variable-speed drive technology for a new 1,000-mw pumped-storage hydropower project being constructed on the Bhagirathi River in Uttarakhand.
Called “Voltage Source Drive technology” by GE Power Conversion, the system will be used on all of the pumped-storage plant's variable-speed generators, allowing for power production in both generating and pumping modes. The variable-speed pumped storage plant will be the first of its kind in India, GE Power Conversion said, and will help provide much needed stability for the country's power grid.
“As we bring our technology to India, one of the world's fastest growing regions for power generation, we are helping to meet the needs for cleaner, efficient and reliable electricity,” GE Power Conversion executive Stephan Kramer said. “Because of its efficiency and productivity benefits, variable-speed drive technology is an excellent match for the region's power needs.”
The project is being developed by the THDC India Ltd (formerly Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd) that awarded a $412 million contract to Alstom in June 2011 for four 250-mw turbines, outlet valves, and control and protection systems.
