Indiabulls Group joined the league of independent power producers when its flagship company Indiabulls Power Ltd recently synchronized the first unit of its thermal plant in the western state of Maharashtra. The first unit of 270 mw is part of the 2,700-mw coal-fired power plant taking shape at Nandgaonpeth in Amravati district.

In the first phase, a total capacity of 1,350 mw will be set up through five units of 270-mw each. The remaining four units of Phase-I will be commissioned at an interval of two months, a statement by Indiabulls Power noted.

Power generated will be sold to state utility Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (Mahavitran) at Rs.3.26 per kwh under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

The main plant (BTG) package for the Amravati project was supplied by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. Some other suppliers and contractors associated with the project were ABB, Siemens, Alstom Grid, L&T, Shapoorji Pallonji, GDC, Paharpur Cooling Towers, etc.

Other details: The Amravati plant is coming up on a 135-acre expanse of land allotted by Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. Coal will be supplied through linkages extended by South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL), Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL) and Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) – all subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd. Vidharbha Irrigation Development Corporation (VIDC), Nagpur, has approved water allocation 87.6 million cubic meters per annum. Evacuation of power will be done at 400kV level using the Akola transmission line managed by PGCIL and Mahatransco.

Indiabulls Power is developing a similar 2,700-mw power plant at Sinnar in Nashik district of Maharashtra. This plant, identical to the Amravati plant in its configuration, is currently under construction.
